Chelsea Football Club is in mourning following the death of Ken Bates, the former owner and chairman who transformed the club during his more than two decades at the helm. Bates, who was born in Ealing, London, on 4 December 1931, passed away on 11 July 2026 at the age of 94.
The club released a statement expressing profound sadness at the loss, extending heartfelt condolences to Bates’ wife Suzannah, along with the rest of his family and friends. The statement praised his determination to fight for Chelsea during difficult periods and his role in driving the team toward trophy success, describing his legacy as one that will never be forgotten.
Bates purchased Chelsea for a symbolic £1 in 1982, taking over a club mired in financial trouble. He went on to hold the chairmanship for 22 years, making him the third-longest serving chair in the club’s history. Known for being colorful and outspoken, his tenure was marked by a fierce battle to keep Stamford Bridge as Chelsea’s home after property developers threatened to evict the club, a fight he ultimately won.
Under his stewardship, Chelsea returned to the top flight and captured multiple honours, including two FA Cups, the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, and the League Cup, among other trophies. In 2003, Bates sold his stake in the club to Roman Abramovich, though he remained chairman for several more months afterward.
